The Writer's Curse

Wintersweet

“What follows is dramatic, often tragic,” he said. No plot would survive the curse. No character could escape. The merciless writer took it upon himself to leave no witnesses. The reader, defenseless and unaware, embarked in a journey of horror. Fate was critical, the end inevitable. “Why can’t you leave one character alive to tell the story?” one of the students in his writing workshop asked. The writer frowned. “I can do whatever I want. So, why should I?” The following year there was no workshop. The students heard that he had lost track of the difference between reality and fiction. He was now writing a story where the main character desperately tries to survive the hardships of jail. Now that we think about it, he was right; sometimes reality and fiction are hard to tell apart.
